Emotions ran high at a public hearing Monday concerning the recent Executive Order that prohibits firearms on any city-owned property.
Marbella Mayor Gregory J. Heep signed the Executive Order on Sunday.
The Executive Order states that these areas include parks and community centers. It also directs city departments to report back to the mayor's office within 30 days to implement a gun-free policy.
Recent gun-related violence on city property, most notably at the Folklife Festival on May 24 which injured three people.
“The reason for this executive order is clear,” Heep said. “The city’s parks, community centers and events are safer without guns."
However not every Marbella resident shared Heep's views on the firearm restrictions.
Bertrand Birch, the owner of a gun shop in north Marbella, was against the Executive Order.
"It also opens the door to tyranny and squashes liberty." Birch argued. "We will mount a legal challenge."
But support was high from gun violence victims and their families.
Carla Worthininham's 10 year-old daughter was blinded by a drive-by shooting near the Marbella Public Library last June. Holding her daughter's hand, she supported the mayor's order.
